Conviction is Not Condemnation

Conviction: The Voice That Opens Doors

A word study turned into a word of life, RyanBruzan.com

What the Word Actually Means

The word conviction comes from the Latin convincere, which means to convince or persuade someone of something, and in this review to overcome completely. It not manipulation though some people might interpret it as such, but rather it is the act of bringing someone into alignment with what is actually true. Some examples would be to conquer a lie or defeat a deception. Think something hidden, thoroughly exposed, something you could not see, suddenly seen.

There is a moment in the book of Acts that captures this perfectly. Saul is on his way to do harm. He is certain he is right. He is operating in full confidence of his blindness. And then, light! A voice from above. The scripture says scales fell from his eyes.

"Instantly something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he got up and was baptized." — Acts 9:18, NLT

That right there is conviction, not condemnation or punishment. The scales falling is about the moment reality breaks through. It’s the moment you finally see what you could not see before.

Conviction Is Not Condemnation

Conviction and condemnation are not the same thing, and confusing them is costly.

Condemnation says you are beyond help. Condemnation says you are what you did. Condemnation closes the file on you. Conviction says something entirely different. Conviction says there is something here worth saving. Conviction says I love you enough to show you the truth. Conviction says the door is still open. Walk through it.

"Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death." — 2 Corinthians 7:10, NIV

Paul draws a sharp line there. There is a grief that kills, and there is a grief that heals. The grief that kills is condemnation. It has no exit, no remedy, and no hope. The grief that heals? That is conviction doing its holy work. Like a refining fire, it hurts because truth sometimes does and it leads you somewhere.

Think of It Like a Doctor

If a doctor found something dangerous in your bloodwork, something that had been quietly growing inside you. If you are smart you wouldn’t call that doctor your enemy, you would call him a gift. What you cannot see cannot be treated, and what you refuse to name cannot be healed.

Conviction is the Great Physician showing you the bloodwork. Not to destroy you, but to save your life.

What to Do When It Comes

The next time you feel that pull in your chest, that quiet discomfort when the Spirit puts His finger on something, don’t run from it. Embrace it; don’t harden against it. Recognize the voice of God is not the voice of the accuser. The warden wants you to feel guilty and stuck. The Spirit of God wants you to feel seen and free so you can actually conduct an amendment.

" When he comes, he’ll expose the error of the godless world’s view of sin, righteousness, and judgment…" — John 16:8, MSG

Jesus said the Holy Spirit would come to convict, and He said it as a promise, not a threat or condemnation. The Spirit convicts because He is the Spirit of truth and love and wants us all to be of the best health. And truth, when it comes in love, always opens a door.

The Bottom Line

Conviction is not the end of your story. It is the beginning of a better one.

The scales fall so you can see. You see so you can move. You move so you can be of service to something greater than your own comfort.

What you finally see, you can do something about. What you finally name, you can finally surrender. What you surrender to the hand of God, He can actually heal.

Conviction is not a prison sentence. It is a promotion toward wholeness.
